kodomo's guide to the best mother's day

holidays are the best for coming together and sharing love with our family members and closest friends. holidays - no matter how big or small - are a great time to reflect and show thankfulness for the people in our lives! on may 10th we get to celebrate the mother's and mother figures in our lives. it is such a fun time to show mom how grateful you are for everything she does!

we've rounded up a few fun homemade gift ideas, that are easy for kids to make, as well as other cute activities that let mom see how much she is appreciated!

breakfast in bed

kodomo owner, jasmine, shared her favorite healthy and easy pancake mix that she loves to make with her boys!

this recipe is protein-packed and a yummy mother's day recipe that the kiddos can make -almost- by themselves (we suggest a little bit of adult supervision in the kitchen).

a healthy twist on traditional pancakes is sure to be a welcomed surprise for mom!

the recipe can be found on weelicious.com

what you need:

just 8 simple & easy ingredients!

3 eggs

1 cup cottage cheese

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 tablespoons honey or agave

1/2 cup flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

butter, oil or oil spray

what to do:

combine the eggs, cottage cheese, vanilla extract, and 2 tablespoons honey or agave in a bowl and whisk

in a separate bowl, whisk the dry ingredients

pour the dry mixture into the wet mixture and stir until just combined

next, heat a large sauté pan or griddle over medium heat & lightly coat with oil or butter

then, pour about 1 tbsp of the mixture onto the griddle for each pancake

cook for 2 minutes on each side or until pancakes are set and golden

serve with maple syrup or honey and enjoy!

home made jewelry

nothing is more sentimental than a homemade gift. so much time, effort, and personal thought is put into something made by hand, from the littles that mom loves with her whole heart!

omy design & play has created a super fun, guided, paper bead kit that teaches the kiddos how to make their own homemade jewelry.

not only will this activity keep them busy, it also teaches them how to give a gift made from scratch.

the paper beads kit is made in france and contains 1 neon elastic band and 6 sheets of paper, along with easy to follow instructions

create your own colorful jewelry with handmade paper beads with this simple and play activity to share!

after learning how to make your own paper bead jewelry from omy's kit, you can apply the instructions to other materials you have at home.

using different colored string and types of paper, you can put your own twist on this project and make more jewelry for mom and other family members for mother's day!

and nothing is sweeter than matching jewelry for little and mamma to share!

flower bouquets

flowers are a traditional mother's day gifting go-to! they symbolize life, love, and happiness and especially show our thankfulness and gratitude to the people who are most important in our lives.

fresh flowers are perfect for spring in a nice vase, or wrapped up in some pretty paper as a gift!

pick your own bouquet from your personal garden, or stop by the local market. if you're in the boston or greater boston area, we recommend:

-central square florist in cambridge, ma

-rouvalis in beacon hill

-wilson farm in lexington, ma

more homemade fun! check out this activity that is fun for the kids and so sweet to give to mom!

we suggest writing adjectives to describe mom on each "petal," or if  there are multiple siblings, have all the kids work on the project together and sign their name on each petal!

directions:

 1. trace the hand and part of the arm to create the hand that holds the bouquet

2. trace one regular handprint in 5 different colors (or however many color combinations you wish)

3. cut 5 long strips of green paper to create flower stems

4. glue the green flower stems to the bigger/background cardstock first, then glue the handprint holding the flowers on top

5. glue the handprints on top of the stems in whatever color order you choose!

6. decorate the petals with glitters, stickers, marker, etc. to personalize this fun homemade gift for mom!

gardening and planting flowers is a great mother's day activity, especially for the springtime, as we welcome the nicer weather and sunshine!

stop by your local market or flower shops to purchase some seeds. either flower seeds, or decide to plant and grow your very own vegetables!!

if you grow you own flowers, these can be such a fun little gift to pick, cut, and wrap up nicely for mom!
